Competitive trail and endurance horses

What do competitors look for in a suitable endurance and/or competitive trail horse?  I currently have a 6 yr old Arabian gelding that I would be interested in leasing (or selling) to someone who is actively competitive IF the horse is suitable.  Currently he is being wasted lolling around in a pasture all day.  Thanks.

P.S.  I live in Virginia east of Richmond.
