Lawton Johnston

I just spoke with Pat Sager, long time friend and companion to both
Lawton and his wife Frances before she passed on several years ago.

This man was a true gentleman, well respected, admired and loved by
everyone who was blessed to meet or ride with him. I served with him on
the selection committee for USA East for the North American
Championships in 1991 and knew him well myself. He was not only a great
rider, but a ride manager in the true southern spirit.

Pat has asked that I pass the following information along and perhaps
those of you who know something of his past accomplishments will share
them with Steph for Endurance.net and Glenda for the SERA Newsletter and
hopefully for a tribute to him in an upcoming issue of Endurance News.
Please send any photos and information to Pat Sager
(johnston@scescape.net) and to the others listed above. More than 25
years of accomplishment the right way more than deserves to be
recognized.

Visitation Sunday evening at Napier Funeral Home, 315 Main Street,

Services Monday 3:30 PM at: Saint Johns United Methodist Church, 18
Gregg Street, Graniteville, SC 29829

Pat said that she found Lawton in his bed that morning. He had said he
had not felt better in some time and in fact, rode one of his several
horses at least 12 miles every day. Many of us last saw him at the
Biltmore 100 May 6th where his horse was pulled, but Lawton was only
disappointed because he said he felt great and could have finished
before midnight.

Those who knew Lawton know that he always had a kind word and a true
endurance riders attitude of "To Finish is to Win". He was nominated
and inducted to the AERC Hall of Fame not too many years ago. He will
truly be missed by a great many.
