Aren't they usually only started about 6 months before their first start? For
an arab, at what age would you start the horse and how long before the first
start? I guess I wouldn't make any money breaking at 3, doing 2 years LSD and
then IT and the track at 5.

First, you assume that what everybody else is doing is wrong, because they all have barns chock full of cripples. Then you go back to basics and design an exercise protocol that is divided approaximately into thirds--1/3 mileage building, 1/3 cardiovascular work (including overdistance intervals) and 1/3 race-specific work ( including high speed intervals and tapering). If you have 9 months before the owner insists you must race, then you have 3 months in each stage. If you are six months away, then only two months can be devoted to each stage. Obviously, more time is better--but remember, TB people think that 2 miles at a time is a marathon and that three continuous miles of work will eventually kill the horse.
