I always ASK if the first check is a courtesy check if I'm not sure and if
there is a lot of commotion...sometimes just the vet stepping up and
putting the scope on the horse will shoot up the pulse.  Most vets will
stand a few moments and let the horse settle if they seem uptight before
counting (THANK YOU, VETS & OTHER PULSE TAKERS!). My husband CANNOT hear
the heartbeat through a stethoscope no matter how hard he tries.  I have
tried the more expensive stethoscopes for him with no success.  Guess I
just have to take it myself to be sure!!  :)
