Why don't you just change reins.  Seems to me trying to make these reins
work by tying them down or together is more hassle and perhaps dangerous too
in some circumstances.  If you substituted another type of connection, you'd
sacrifice the quick release you were looking for.   Don't you just hate it
when you by something new that looks great but just doesn't work?
