It's been several years with my mare, and I got the story second hand, but if 
memory serves, it was either a fox bite or a skunk bite.

BTW--because of reasonable compliance with canine vaccination laws and the 
increase in feral cat numbers, cats are quickly replacing dogs as the 
domestic animals most apt to have and pass rabies...
