How much work your horse needs will depend on how long, and to what
degree he has been laid off since he did his 100's. The pace of a CTR
varies somewhat depending on region and terrain. You should find out
what the pace and terrain will be and train at the same pace and on
similar terrain if possible (and this can include sand as well as hills.)
I would recommend you ride 2 or 3 times a week. For a 25 mile ride
I would ride 12-17 miles once a week at the CTR pace (if your horse can
not handle this easily cut back on the pace to start) and add some shorter,
somewhat faster rides between times. I don't like to ride more than 4 times
a week personally. I would not go over 40 miles a week riding and I think
25 miles a week is enough for a 25. Depending on what kind of CTR it is
and what kind of rides your horse did before, you should also train for
"trail manners" by riding with other horses. Work on acceptance of staying
behind other horses, stopping and letting you dismount and mount while the
group walks on, and making detours over branches etc while the other horses
go down the main trail.
There are some good conditioning posts in the archives that include
more details.
Good luck on your ride,
Teresa
