  • Darlene's Travel Notes: October 7
    From Darlene M. Anderson
Ina McLean, Charleen Farrell and I have headed off to Maryland, overland! Ina is the driver extreme and we're flying low! Ina's wonderful gadget junkie husband has set us up on the laptop, complete w/wireless connection so I can keep everyone updated on our trip. What a cool guy! Thanks Mike!
The three of us, as well as John Rosen and the Westergards are part of "Team Giles-Sproat", PNER's sole "American" entrants to the North American Championship in Fairhill, Maryland. The Canadians have sent off Claudia Harper on Al Paulo's horse, Buddy. Carol, Sharon, and Claudia left last week and at last report were already in Nebraksa, travelling just fine. Please send your best juju thoughts to Ron and Carol to finish this ride with two healthy happy horses. So far Stranger and Sue are taking the trip in stride. Two tuff ponies!
I'll endeavor to keep everyone updated throughout our pilgramage, via the lists. I'll post pictures as well.
No horses for us, but ironically, Ina's trailer is PLUMB full!!!
Take care all, happy trails and we'll see you soon.

    Stardate 12:16 pm: Lincoln, Nebraska:
Pulled an all nighter, Ina drove an incredible 1225 miles in 21 hrs!!! Charleen took over in Cheyenne, Wyoming and drove through to Lincoln, NE. Then she was relagated to the top of Ina's trailer, strapped on, of course, after she bathed...I think...in diesel fuel while filling the truck up. I told her to just take a spit bath, but apparently she has a thing against spit...what gives? If we should happen to run out of fuel, we'll shove Charleen in the gas tank and go for another 400 miles or so.
There is a Silverlite ahead of us, OR plates, and Ina smells it...Carol...watch your back door, cause we're steaming towards the east coast, with catching you our paramount!!

From Darlene M. Anderson 6:45 am: 10\9: Arrived in Wheeling, WV. Currently searching for a state spoon for Charleen, who is an avid collector. She even has a map, laminated, with states marked "S/A"...for "spoon aquired". Well, West Virginia was a spoonless state, thus started our Quest for the Spoon, The Precious, THE Spoon we will not leave WV without.
Some notes from one who has spent most of her short life west of the Continental Divide...All of the churches we've seen in Wheeling are HUGE! The buildings are OLD, and beautiful for the most part.Lots of monuments and old stuff. I'm looking forward to checking this place out.
Ina is currently singing little songs about wrapping her horse trailer, none too short or small, as most of you know, around one of these tight street corners in our Quest for the Spoon. Rather entertaining from the Navigator's standpoint...that's me, the Navigator.
As it sits now, we're due to beat Carol and Sharon to the ride site, unless the Quest for the Spoon does not get fulfilled in a timely manner. Did I mention that this place, unlike Seattle, Portland, Bend, etc, does not wake up at 5 a.m. and brew coffee? Everyone is asleep in this place and it's 7 freakin AM!! East Coast people...
So...we'll continue our Quest and I'll drop a note later describing our success or not. Pictures to follow...cause Ina says failure is NOT an option. Mostly cause Charleen's fingers are wrapped around her throat, gently for the time being, from the back seat. I think she's still a little miffed over the whole being strapped on top of the trailer thing after her diesel hazmat incident back in Nebraska. Hmmmm...2564 miles and 44 and some hours after departure from Powell Butte, OR, we're getting a little giddy.

    Darlene's Travel Notes: October 10
From Darlene M. Anderson 10/9/05 7 pm EST: We've all arrived safe and sound, even Charleen, who has finally gotten all the bugs out of her teeth ;-).
Carol and Sharon pulled in about 2 hrs after we did. Stranger and Sue look great! Neither are tucked up or even look road weary at all. Michelle Roush and I took them for a mile and a half hike and they both moved freely and looked happy to be done road tripping.
Sharon had some trouble figuring out who's name her hotel room was under, but Charleen, Ina and I had none of that trouble! We're staying in the McLean Taj Mahal.
Geez, I feel jet lagged, the time difference is incredible. Sharon is unbelievably perky and full of her regular stories and jokes. Sharon and Ina are shooting pics of everyone w/their cameras, it's dueling cameras! Fun had by all, still.
    More later,
    Darlene
