Yup....I got bucked off right before the start of the 20 Mule Team 100, and
sure do appreciate the help of Dr. Mike Tomlinson, Steve Shaw, Kristen
Seyferth, Jim Bumgardner, and a very together blond young woman who helped
me after the fall, and a guy who helped me break camp who'd had the
misfortune of having his horse fall with him at 95 miles, and whose names I
didn't get. Steve's right, .....landing head first in a pile of horse
manure cushoned the crash enough that I didn't hurt my head at all (my
Troxel may take some of the credit.....) And if I hadn't been carrying two
hard plastic water bottles in a waist pack, I might not have broken the
ribs or punctured the lung (which the hospital just called to inform me is
their revised diagnosis).

Actually, I really enjoyed my day at the vet checks, where I had the
pleasure of renewing many old acquaintances and meeting some fellow
ridecampers. And watching how hard Jackie Bumgardner works to put on this
huge ride. It was fun helping her.

But the big thrill was crewing for my horse, Nature's Sungari, the 1/2
Russian Orlov who was ridden to 9th place by Renata Farinelli de Sequiera
from Brazil, thereby hopefully cinching her inclusion on the Brazilian
team for the Pan American Championships. Renata also finished the Cosequin
Challange on this great young horse, and will be leasing him for the
PanAms. Her two dreams in life, according to her mom, who also crewed,
have always been to become a veterinarian and to ride on her country's
team. She'll be realizing both dreams in the next year. Renata is a
kind, soft spoken, thoughtful and conservative rider; it is an honor to
have her ride my horse.
