April, I'm sure you've heard about enough about starting w/o a crew, so I won't repeat too much. I've been riding endurance for 5 years, and I started 25 and some 50's with no crew. I found it worked great because it allowed me to learn what my horse and I needed during a ride, all at a slow [my] pace. Needless to say, I rode many, many miles alone, but well worth it. When I started picking up the pace and riding faster, and my husband started crewing for me, I was able to help him do a better job for Spirit and I because I already knew what we needed and when we needed it.
This is the greatest sport in the world, so enjoy!
