Reminds me of one we had here briefly--he had a horse with an old splint and 
was rolling a pencil up and down the splint to TRY to get the horse to limp!  
I was riding that day, and saw him doing it--and managed to stay out of his 
line the rest of the day, too.  Encountered him at another ride--the person 
with whom I was riding made an error and did not warm his horse up at all 
before the half-way check on a 100.  He went straight over from the trailer, 
and the horse took a couple of tentative steps in the rear and then trotted 
right out fine.  This guy said--"He's tied up.  You're out."  Never even laid 
a hand on the horse!  I was appalled.  Maybe there was a problem, but to 
dismiss a horse without at least checking it out is pretty absurd.
To the best of my knowledge, the man has never vetted a ride since.
