That's been my experience with most of my horses, whatever the food source.  
They will eat like crazy at checks, anything that is put in front of them, 
but 45 minutes is about the max that the food will hold their attention--and 
then they're restive and ready to go again.  The one time I really had a 
problem getting a horse out of vet checks, I discovered post-ride that I'd 
broken the tree in my saddle and he had a sore back--no energy problem at 
all, but he flat hurt and was too stoic to complain more than by being 
reluctant to leave.  Boy, did I feel like a heel!
