AERC drug rule, MSM

AERC Rule:
13) The integrity Of Endurance Competition requires that the
equine is not influenced by any drug, medication or veterinary
treatment. Endurance equines must compete entirely on their
natural ability. AERC prohibits from competition equines who
contain evidence of the administration of abnormal substances
or of normal substances in abnormal amounts (exogenously
administered compounds even if normally found endogenously).
Since the complete effects of such administration cannot be
known, the fairness and safety require the prohibition of such
practices.

MSM supplementation would probably be considered a 'normal substance
(bio-available sulfer) in abnormal amounts' and should not
be given *during competition*. Some substances and drugs have
published withdrawal times, some do not. Some are tested
for, some are not. If you have any questions about the
'testability' or withdrawal time of a specific substance,
it would be best to contact your vet, or a member of the
AERC veterinary committee. They can advise you. Remember,
the AERC rules only apply to competition time - between
vetting in, and getting final completion or BC judging.
If you have been administering a substance which persists
in the blood stream (e.g. bute) then you need to be aware
of the withdrawal time - how long before a competition you
need to stop administering it so that it is no longer in
the horse's bloodstream during the competition.
