Corynebacterium pseudotuberculosis.  It is pretty much a disease of central 
California, but does occasionally show up further south in CA and up here in 
Oregon.  (We had a horrid outbreak of it here about 8 years ago, and have 
seen a smattering of cases ever since.)  It is presumably spread by flies or 
other mechanical vectors.  It manifests as abcesses--primarily in the chest, 
along the ventral midline, or in the groin--in udder or sheath, depending on 
gender.  The chest abcesses can be very deep and be basketball-sized.  
Occasional cases will get internal abcesses. 

Mules tend to be a bit tougher-hided, so it would not surprise me if they 
were somewhat more resistant to this one...
