At a seminar on horse management that I attended they put it like this:

Nutrition can never surpass genetics, but BAD nutrition can hinder
genetics.

In common words, you can't make a race horse faster by what you feed
him, but you could fail to reach his potential if you don't feed him
PROPERLY!!
