I agree with the original poster that you can be basically a good person and still racist. Not that I'm saying that Howard necessarily is, no matter how his post sounded. My next door neighbor is one of the kindest, most generous men I know. He's come racing (literally) to my rescue more than once. He'll stop and help a stranger change a tire in a pouring rain. You get the picture? Yet, he uses the "n" word like it's just another word like "cabinet." He makes remarks that are definitely rascist, but would he ever harm another person because of his or her skin color? No. Would he refuse to help someone in need because of skin color? No. Would he refuse to socialize with someone because of skin color? Probably. Might he hurt someone's feelings with an unthinking remark? Definitely. But can he be categorized as just a bad person??? I don't think so, but everyone's entitled to an opinion.
