Just thought everyone might be interested in a 24 hour ride that was
done in Alberta 3 or 4 years ago.  They did it on a 12 mile loop so it
wasn't as boring for both riders and horses as the one done in Eastern
Canada about 5 years ago.

The winner did 204 miles and then 192 miles for second and 180 miles for
3rd and 4th.  Actually, I think all 4 of these riders did 208 miles, but
lost loops if a horse didn't look ready to go again or cramped up or
anything else.  They were really careful of the horses as the weather
was completely crazy that day.  We had sun, rain, wind, then sleet and
snow during the night.  It was completely insane and hasn't been done
since but it was something we all look back  and marvel at.  I think
there were about 20 riders signed up and lots of them went for awhile,
then slept, got up and went again.  The 4 that did over 200 miles never
slept.  It's the only time I've seen a ride be much tougher on the
riders than the horses. I remember laughing so hard at one lady who went
to bed with 3 of her friends, then sneaked out and got in an extra loop
on them.

We, who crewed for these crazies, were only slightly less nutty than
them.  Can you imagine getting vets for this.  I figure you could only
do this about every 10 years because by then everyone only remembers the
fun part of it.
