Collars on horses

Hi, Campers,

Forgive me for a stupid question, but regarding collars for horses...I like
the idea, and I have a grooming collar for Jordan that I use when I'm
grooming him in cross ties (which is never, these days..he just stands and
lets me do whatever I want with him.). When he wears it, if he puts his head
down, the collar slides up his neck and stops at the throat. Is this okay? I
never leave it on him, because I'm afraid that if, while he's grazing, he
could, conceivably, put a hoof through the loose collar as it's dangling
around his throat. I also think that, again, conceivably, he could step on
the collar and pull his head out of it.
Am I missing the point, then? Are the collars supposed to be tight, or go
around the throat? Someone please tell me the proper use of a collar.
Plus I find that they don't give me the control of his head that I want on
the few occasions when I do halter him.
I said they were dumb questions,..

Michelle
