Part of a horse's price is "what the traffic will bear", but on the other
hand I heard recently that one of the hottest new Arab crosses is the
Arab/Paint. So I would guess that $5,000 is what the owner thinks she is
worth in terms of show potential and in terms of her novelty color. Another
point, I have a 3 months old filly that we bred, and I easily had $2,500
worth of expenses in her before she hit the ground. That includes all the
vet care for the mare, the stud fee, etc. It did not include the mare's
general upkeep (feed, hoof trimming, etc.) So I tend to be more sympathetic
towards breeders and sellers than I used to. I might not pay $5,000 for a 2
1/2 year old filly, but it's not overpriced in terms of what the breeder has
in her to raise her to this age. If you like her and can afford her, pay it
and don't look back! You'll derive more than that price in pleasure in her
over the years.

P.S. You could probably buy a full aged, ready to ride, almost ready to
compete endurance horse for the same money. I've noticed that asking prices
for ready to go endurance horses has gone up in the past couple of years.
Used to be $2500-$3500 would buy an endurance horse. I'm seeing prices more
like $4500-$7500 now. Don't know if sellers are getting what they ask,
however.
