Rubber Mats Storage

I am a  newbie with trailers having bought my first one (all aluminum
stock trailer) a few months ago.  What is the proper way of storing the
rubber mats?  I know about cleaning them, washing the floor and drying
all and then returing the mats and I have the trailer parked with the
rear end lower so that the water runs out.  Do you just leave them in or
should you store them elsewhere for the winter.  I live in Virginia.
