I have several cats who have adopted me (and woe to them, they've been
neutered/spayed along the way). They live in my barn and are cared for very
well (they DON'T have to live on mouse meat). IF I tried to keep them
indoors there would be sheer bedlam here (we also have a jack russel and a
border collie who would consider it open season on kitties if they came
inside). Luckily, we live in an area where the biggest danger to cats is the
coyotes -- the coyotes stay away from the dogs, and the cats stay away from
pretty much anything canine so it works out ok. I think the person who posted
about her poor cat being shot was appropriately shocked that a human being
could be so cruel. God help us when we stop being shocked by this kind of
cruelty! I agree that cats prefer to be allowed out, unfortunately, there
are areas where this isn't an option -- live near a busy street, live near
psychos who shoot at animals, etc. etc. I'm pretty sure the original poster
won't let her cat outside anymore -- how sad is that?
