Trails Meetings

Ridecampers and other friends: There are two meetings of interest
coming up. First is one this Wednesday (sorry for the short notice) in
San Jose: the Calif. Recreational Trails Committee. Nov. 17 from 9 to
12 am at the Isaac Newton Senter (sic) Auditorium, Santa Clara County
gov. Center, 70 West Hedding St., 1st floor, San Jose. Of interest to
equestrians is item no. III.C under New Business: California Riding and
Hiking Trail.
The CRHT was dreamed up in the 1940's as a trail that would run
along the coast, the length of the state. Several sections were actually
dedicated, with brown posts/yellow tops to mark the route. The idea
languished, despite the mandate the state legislature gave State Parks
Dept., to implement the trail. Now a small but dedicated group of
people are working to restore the trail sections and to get State Parks
to do what was mandated years ago.
(I can't go; I have Open Space/Trails Committee meeting here in Marin
all morning.)
Second meeting of interest, and this gives everyone LOTS of time!
The 17th Annual Calif. Trails and Greenways Conference will be held in
conjunction with the 15th National Trails Symposium. The NTS, provided
by American Trails, will be from the 21st thru the 24th of September,
2000, in Redding, California. Calif. State Parks is the state host, the
City of Redding is the local host. We'll have a chance to share and
network with experts from all over the country. For more info (as it
appears) go to http://outdoorlink.com/amtrails . Mark your calendars,
California horsepeople. We NEED to be represented, to be seen and
heard, at these major conferences. Please don't think "oh, so-and-so
can represent me just fine" -- we need numbers and from a variety of
groups. It's on my calendar already. To be put on a mailing list
about Calif. Recreational Trails Committee news, please contact Charlie
Willard, email cwill@parks.ca.gov . Thank you, Connie Berto,
Trails Committee Chair, AERC
