broodmares

Hi Folks -

I've never tried to convert a younger broodmare to a riding horse, and wondered how well this works.  Is it hard to get them back into condition?  Do they retain that rounded motherly look?  Is there some noticeable difference between a riding mare who has not had a foal and a mare who has?  YES, these are ignorant questions and I'm almost ashamed to ask.  It feels so politically incorrect!!

I have one 18 year old mare who has had four foals, and though I've not worked terribly hard at it, it's really hard to get her to lose even 50 lbs when drylotted and given exercise.  She's quite roly-poly, but she's a big ole heavy built QH gal.

Please educate me!
