Dolly hi a some what belated response to your query im afraid! My horse has side bones, that is the originally soft cartilage around the pastern above the cornet has become raised and then hardened. I assume you have the same problem. The names a bot of a misnomer as its cartilage rather than bones which are effected. Ring bone is a seperate issue as that effects the actual pastern bones and potentially the joints. My horses side bones appeaerd when he was six and started doing more road work. They went down that winter, came up again the following year and have stayed up ever since. The pastern from from on looks a little more conical above the cornet to the mid pastern than usual, but is only noticible to others if I point it out. Ride vets occassionally comment on it, but not adversly. its never caused a lameness problem for me. This is I belive linked to conformation, heavy horses and cobs are more likely to aquire side bones. This is I suspect because like my horse ( who is a Welsh cob) there pasterns are relativly short. Hope the problems resolves itself favourably in your horse. tamara >From: Jim & Dolly Miller <poquito@flash.net> >To: Ridecamp <ridecamp@endurance.net> >Subject: RC: side bones >Date: Tue, 19 Oct 1999 16:21:10 -0500 > >My horse has a start of side bones. Can anyone give me more information >or tell me where I can find information about side bones.
