Maggie,
At the risk of starting another "lighting" war, I still prefer a headlight. 
They have worked the best for us & our horses seem to like them better than 
somthing around their breastcollar. Besides, where we ride the main problem 
is having your head knocked off, not seeing the ground. The horse takes care 
of that. If there aren't any branches & enough markers you usually don't 
need a light, but it's there if you need it. It doesn't bother night vision 
if you don't keep switching it off & on. Leave it either on or off.
That said, Joe is perfectly right that you CANNOT ride behind someone with 
your light on, for all the reasons he says. It gives me severe motion 
sickness. I don't have a problem following somebody with a light though. In 
a group, only the person in front uses the headlight.
My gripe is when you come up behind someone and they just scream for you to 
turn out the light but don't want to let you pass. Or you find someone lost 
because they don't have a light, but don't mind drafting along behind one.
