Since we are sort of on the subject of horse's "rights" on roads...what about on public land? Do horses have the right to go anywhere? I ask this because I grew up spending my summers in what is now Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore in Michigan. They took our property away from us in the mid 70s (a little old acre with a tar paper shack and an outhouse). President Nixon didn't even bother to answer my pitiful little letter about how much we loved our shack! We hunted and hiked those forests for years and I know them quite well. You can still hunt on them except now that it's a national lakeshore, it's actually too crowded for that....so, I went to the park ranger and asked him if I could ride my horse on a certain section of land. He said I can't. He said I can ride on the dirt roads but I wanted to ride on the old logging roads that are like 100 years old and barely noticeable. I was really disappointed. I also wanted to ride on the lakeshore...can't do that either (unless I ride the Shore to Shore, I guess and go on into Empire). So, anyone with experience with federal regulations???? What irks me was that they felt they had to "save" this land for people use but when I want to use it, they say no. But I can go ahead and shoot up the forests (hardly any deer left in the area now anyway!). Makes no sense to me!
