I never have either (but its best to be prepared and kinda fun to fantasize 
about "getting" the bad guys :) and I live in California which is pretty 
thoroughly populated.

My scariest experience was at the Malibu ride when we ran into (gasp) a NAKED 
hiker.  He was swinging along (so to speak) and getting a pretty serious 
sunburn, wearing some high quality hiking boots and a grin.  After we passed 
him, my friend and I had a hysterical laughing fit.  I mean we were in tears, 
holding on to our horses' necks.  Didn't even occur to me to whip out the 
pepper spray  :))
