Black Arabians Headed for Auction after 10-1

Heather Watson watson1@gv.net
Just thought I'd post a message on Ridecamp to see if anyone was
interested in this information:

Apparently, the owner of 5 Arabians from the Malabar breeding
program (true black homozygous)is VERY behind in his boarding at a stable in Modesto,
CA and has to sell his horses by October 1st or else the owner of the stable will sell them. I just talked to the stable owner
again and he is actually a very nice man, but he can't continue
to keep the horses rent free.

If he cannot find a buyer soon,
he will probably end of taking the horses to auction, and as he indicated, unless someone is interested in them they will probably go to the meat buyers...

According to him, one of the stallions was started in Endurance
training before the owner's funds ran out. He didn't know much
else, though. He mentioned that the owner is trying to sell one
for $5,000, but that seems a little unlikely by Friday. He's been trying since at least April...

There are 4 stallions, 3 black and one bay. There is a 21 year
old brood mare who has a year old filly. Both are black. Unfortunately, I don't have much more information, but these horses are definitely worth checking out, especially if they are
headed for auction. I think the going rate is what, $700?

I used to work on Malabar Farms when it was a big outfit and knew a lot of the horses. I showed my own Malabar bred gelding in Open Hunters and 3 Day Eventing, and competed in Open Hunters at the Arabian Nationals. We even did a couple of 25 and 30 milers for "fun" when I first started doing endurance. When the
owner of the farm passed away, the new owner neglegted the remaining herd. What was left was either sold off or died. Someone told me Animal Control or a similar organization was
involved at the end. So when I heard about these 5 horses possibly going to auction, I panicked.

Here's a little history on these horses:

They are true black, very athletic, tall horses with excellent dispositions and lots of substance. Many of the horses from the program are 15-16hh, and would breed black if bred to black. One of the foundation sires, Malabar Duke, was Park horse of the Year in 1977. One of his sons is Jamboree Caliber, star of the Black Stallion Adventures TV show. http://www.nighthawke.com/ranch/caliberph.htm

Check out http://arabian-horses.com/feature/margo/color/black.htm
for information regarding Malabar King/Prince Ebony. He is the leading sire of black arabian foals.

There's a farm in Canada called Dragon Place farms that used Malabar Duke for a lot of their foundation stock...  http://www.jetstream.net/business/dragonplace_farm/index.html

As far a pedigree goes, I know there was a lot of Babson and Crabbet breeding. Some of the notable names in the Malabar lines are Hallanny Mistanny, Abu Farwa, Fadjur, Ibn Fadjur, etc.

There's an add that sometimes runs in Endurance News for a stallion named Bezibn+/ who has a dam named Malabar Budra.
I haven't been able to contact his owner, but I think the
mare is Malabar bred...if she's not its quite a coincidence...

Anyway, I figured that I'd share this information to see if anyone on Ridecamp knows anyone or is interested themselves in
one of these horses... I'd hate to see them go to the slaughter
house or end up in the wrong hands...

The stable owner's name is:
Homer Couchman
3131 Illinois Ave
Modesto,CA 95358-9471
(209)523-8247

Feel free to contact me as well if you'd like a little more info
about the Malabar program...

Thanks!
