THE $25,000 COSEQUIN CHALLENGE ATTRACTS
WORLD-CLASS ENDURANCE COMPETITORS

Fort Valley, VA—September 13, 1999—Top endurance horses and riders are
coming from all corners of the world to compete in the second annual $25,000
Cosequin Challenge on September 18 in the mountainous terrain of Fort
Valley, VA.
Sheik Mohammed bin Rashid al Maktoum, the Crown Prince of Dubai, of the
United Arab Emirates, is expected to ride his horse TK Fire N'Gold in the
100 mile contest. His son, Sheik Rashid bin Mohammed al Maktoum, winner of
the $300,000 World's Most Preferred Endurance Ride in the United Arab
Emirates last winter, will also participate in the event. Other marquis
names expected to compete include: Wendy Merendini of Ridgecrest, CA.
Merendini was a member of the United States Equestrian Team (USET) Silver
Medal team at the 1998 World Endurance Championship in the UAE last
December. Christine Janzen of Spruce Grove, AB, Canada is also riding fresh
from her Bronze Medal performance at the 1999 Pan American Endurance
Championship.
Two-time World Endurance Champion Valerie Kanavy who originally thought up
the idea of the Cosequin Challenge, is taking the role of trail master this
year. Kanavy is looking forward to the Challenge once again.
"We were very happy with the response in the first Cosequin Challenge last
year," said Kanavy. "We had over 100 competitors so it was hard work, but
also a lot of fun. We are so grateful to Cosequin for sponsoring the ride.
It is because of their participation that this event is so successful."
The Cosequin Challenge is unique in that it is the only endurance event in
the United States that offers prize money. Cosequin, a division of Nutramax
Laboratories is sponsoring the event and will hand out checks to the top ten
finishers, including $5,000 to the winner. There will also be a 100K ride
as part of the Cosequin Challenge for those who aren't quite ready for the
longer distance.
