I agree.  And once again, the experienced horseman knows whether his horse 
needs that calmer environment or not and can choose accordingly, whereas the 
green rider may not have the experience to know if his horse needs that or 
not.  The experienced rider with a flightier horse is more apt to do more 
"homework" before coming to the endurance ride (especially since he is also 
less apt to be trying the LD and therefore has more homework to do to be 
ready for a 50) and hence is also less apt to have problems--he knows what 
homework must be done, and the green rider is still striving to learn that.  
These are generalizations, of course, but nonetheless, CTR's are a wonderful 
place for green riders to get started, even if their main goal is to do 
endurance.
