XeroxPARC (Xerox Palo Alto Research Center--the folks who
brought you the bit-mapped display, visual interface popularized
by Apple and stolen by Microsoft) was doing research into
the problems engendered by e-mail communication back in
the late 1970's. The fact that the emotional overtones
with which a comment is delivered tend to get completely
lost and misinterpreted was one of the most glaring things
they discovered.

"Smileys" help, i.e. :-) (delivered with a smile)
;-) (winky face, means its a joke)

It also helps to hang around awhile and you get used to
different peoples' way of expressing themselves, and
to recognize when they are joking and when they are
going for blood.

Finally, you will eventually understand that people who spend
their time on Internet listserves complaining about how
offended they are at what other people post are going
to spend a great deal of their life feeling offended.
