Fast twitch/slow twitch muscle fibers

Sharon Settles settl002@mc.duke.edu
Barb's message of course sparked my attention because my training
is exercise physiology in humans. I'm not sure how much crossover
there is but as each human is genetically predisposed to have
more fast twitch or slow twitch muscle fibers, it makes sense that
horses would too. Hence, 100 meter sprinters have more fast twitch
fibers (Quarter Horses) and long distance runners have more slow
twitch fibers (Arabians). That doesn't mean a genetically predisposed
sprinter wouldn't do well at long distance running, just the training
may take longer to acheive the desired results. All of us have a
mix of slow/medium/fast twitch fibers and training properly for the
activity will bring out the best results for the individual (human
or horse). What's my point? Well, I guess I'm try to say that genetic
predisposition plays a role and certain breeds of horses have different
predispositions, but training and desire may play the biggest role
in acheiving your goals.
