We trim Haflingers at a breeding farm in northern Michigan and have learned
a bit about their history.  According to these breeders all Haflingers are
descended from one Arab stallion.  (Very evident in the heads which are
very pretty and obviously Arab in type...at least the ones I have seen). 
When they are weaned they are taken into the mountains (Austria, I think?)
and left until they are 4 (or 5?) when they are brought back down and begin
their life's work for man.  They are hefty critters, some around 1200# and
only 13-14 HH but I can see that some could very well do well in endurance.
 In fact, I think the breeder told us that several are being used in
endurance driving which is popular out East.  Any other interesting info
out there about this breed??  I was thinking a Haflinger/Arab cross would
be a good one for endurance.
