In order to produce bee pollen, "pollen traps" are placed at the entry to
the hive.  The bees pass through these on their way in and in some manner
the traps remove the pollen from the pollen baskets on the bees' back legs.
These hives require extra support, however, because the pollen is "bee
bread" and necessary for it to survive.
    The original market for bee pollen was beekeepers who would feed to
pollen to their hives in the very early spring.  When the pollen came in,
the queen bee would "get with it" and lay a lot of eggs in order to have a
flying force ready to gather the pollen.  Thus, these beekeepers got a
jump-start on the season.
