How many ruin horses trying for a slot in head-to-head competition?  One can 
ruin a horse trying for anything.  We do our best to prevent that in ANY 
scenario by having veterinary standards at rides and rider education.  That's 
about all one can do.

I personally see more horses hurt by speed than by miles.
