AERC NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP RIDES

For those who missed the AERC National Championship 50 & 100 Mile Rides
in the Lincoln National Forest of New Mexico...wow, you really missed
historical, competitive, and exciting rides, as well as some of the most
beautiful mountain country around.

Temperatures for both events, the 100 on the 17th and the 50 on the 20th,
hovered in the low 70's most of the time...perfect for long distance
competition.  Barney Fleming was the Head Vet, assisted by Duane Barnett,
Dwight Hooten, and  Jim Baldwin.  Treatment vet was Sid Zarges.  This was
a first time event for AERC and the concept of competing against your own
division proved to be very popular.  It also made for very exciting
finishes.   Just so you understand, there was no "overall 1st place,
etc.", it was FWT vs FWT, LWT vs LWT, and so on.  Thus, there was no
complaint from any weight division, and it allowed for the heavier
divisions to ride their own race and still be very competitive.  We used
a leader board at the Vet Checks, listing each division and where each
compeitior in that division was.  

There are many things we must do to improve the "pre ride", such as
Promotion, Advertising, Monthly Articles, and so on, but no one can take
away the historical significance of this first AERC Championship, and I
believe every one that was a part of this event felt it was the most fun
endurance event they had been to.
