what's about *old* trucks?



Hey,

I always enjoy the posts of you (American) guys over there about your
Pickup-cars, the debates Chevy vs. Dodge vs. Ford and stuff like that... amazing!

As you know probably, here in Europe we usually pull horsetrailers with
ridiculous small vehicles (those under 18 feet length)... I also have one of
these what you call SUV - here it's borderline to "monster" or "tractor".
So I have a question for you, specialists, honestly. I have some offers here
thats sounds quite realistic:
Ford F250, small cab, long bed, no dually (you know, I don't want to get stuck in
these narrow ways here, really!), 4x4, with 6.9 diesel, no turbo, year '85 oder
'86, manual transmission, well groomed. I know the price would sound too high for
you because shipping, taxes and so on are expensive and a lot of middlemen make
money with it. I like this model.
As I heard about costs of spare engines - by the way it would be quite difficult
to get ANY spare parts, because F-trucks were never sold in Europe -- whats about
lifetime and reliability of these types in general ? would YOU buy such a car
with, say, 50k, 100k, or more miles? the car  I drive for 6 years now (Nissan
Patrol turbodiesel) I know very well. It should last AT LEAST 150k miles daily
work without trouble, regardless of age. in case of good maintenance. Thats my
peronal minumum-requirement for each offroad-car. (If you're lucky, you should
reach more.)
If your approach is, better buy a knew one every 7 years, then I know from start
this would be a bad trade. So what's your oppinion ?
(you can also answer for Chevy or Dodge ;-)
