I have a Quarter horse that I have owned for almost 12 years now. He is coming 15 and did his first 50 at five years old. His entire life up until two years ago he had awful feet. Every farrier I ever used complained about them - shelly, brittle, cracks from the nail holes down and couldn't hold a shoe. Always broke out at the bars. His feet looked terrible. I tried every ointment, salve, food additive and even considered a voodoo mojo, if it would only work. I spent so much time worrying about his feet I couldn't enjoy a ride. The only reason I keep on with this horse is that he had everything else going for him, level headed, plenty or drive, amazing athlete. Then two years ago I started using a farrier who employed the four point shoeing method. Viola, no more feet problems. He grows good healthy hooves and no more breaking out at the bars. I have two other horses that are being shoed this way and they have absolutely no problems either. I believe you have to have a farrier that knows what he is doing and can apply it. That may be the difference. Lee and Boogie, the raging Quarter horse (but with good feet) Kaci, the barefoot pasture potato Bravo, the wannabe endurance horse (What's a Tevis Mom?)
