Dear Howard;
I was thinking the same thing.  Twice I was held up in a late in the
ride vet check, once by someone who counted lub and dup, thereby
doubling the pulse, and once by someone who insisted on counting AND
holding me for a respiration at a check that didn't have a respiration
requirement for the longer distance horses, even tho the pulse was below
criteria. 
How does one get a sixty-ONE pulse in a fifteen second count, anyway?  I
think the sixty bpm criteria came about partly because it is the easiest
for us to count...one beat per second, duh.
It is a thankless, tough job to be a p and r taker, I will admit, but on
an important ride, especially an FEI ride, only the best should be
hired.
