Doris Anderson

My favorite memory of Doris was a time we were riding the Applegate-Lassen
multi-day in 1992. Nearing the end of Day 2, my horse was losing inspiration
as we were slogging along alone on the edge of the Black Rock Desert playa.
Along came Doris on Sweet-P and took the lead, just in front of me. My horse
picked up and went along well, as he now had company. After awhile, Doris
said that she wasn't going to drag me along all the time, that I had to do my
share of leading. I was startled at this statement and told her that I
wasn't just drafting off her horse, I was being polite. I thought it would
be terribly impolite to pass her since her company, and her horse's, had
improved my mount's outlook on the job at hand. So I moved up and led for
awhile. We rode the rest of the way together, as I remember. I think she
finished just in front of me.
