MSM

I know that MSM has been discussed before, but I could not find 
any info on it in the archives, so I was wondering if some of
you
would would help me out with it.

I have a friend that is using MSM on his horse, because of some
problems on his front legs. He had previously done a 13 mile
competitive ride and this horse did very well, but on the last
competitive ride he had problems getting the horses heart rate
to come down. This is the first ride he had done with his horse
being on MSM. Would the MSM have keep the horses heart rate up?
Also is MSM just another pain releiver similar to Bute? Any info
on this would be most helpful.
