This story reminds me that many years ago a Morgan horse -- stallion? -- won the Feather River race twice, defeating appys, quarter horses, the lot... The story goes that soon after the 2nd win, one morning the horse was found in its stall, its face bashed in with a baseball bat. I believe he recovered but of course was never the same...maybe Nikki can help me with the name of this horse (I "know" it, I just can't dredge it from the memory bin) Regards, Connie B Kathi's father, Ed Johnson, and Bezatal won the 1965 Feather River Endurance Race and if I remember right, won it more than one occasion. This race was only 1.5 miles long and ran through a river bottom, up and down steep hills, 100 yards through the Feather River, up a levee, across a road, and into the Yuba-Sutter Fairgrounds in Yuba City, CA. Ed and Bez won this particular ride just after their win in the Tevis that same month. The story and photos are in the November 1965 issue of Western Horseman.
