I don't want to spark the big helmet war, but I think it is an issue that is
going to have to be addressed.  Some rides back East require helmets to
participate.  Jurnior riders are required to wear helmets - at least in SERA
rides - and I believe that it is also an AERC rule also but could be wrong on
that.

At a ride I ran in 96, the head ranger wanted to put a helmet mandatory
requirement on the permit.  This was at the last minute and all the flyers and
info had gone out without such notice, so I was not too happy about it.  I talked
him out of it.  The major argument that got me off the hook was junior riders did
have to wear helmets.

I believe helmets will become required in the future a rides on public lands.  I
am somewhat surprised that helmets aren't required at the Tevis.
