One bad step...

first I want to thank everyone who has given me thoughts and advice on bits,
OF booties and more in the past few weeks. I had been getting my 19 year old
Arab "Drut" ready for an attempt at Tevis. We tried it 11 years ago, got
pulled, and have been doing different things the past 11 years. Anyway,
while ponying him Monday, he did one bad step, smacking his right rear hoof,
against the inside of his left rear ankle joint. (he has done this for
years, and I had on a good pair of leather padded boots) Anyway, he hit so
hard this time, and at just the right angle, that he actually spun the boot
on the leg. Came up instant grade 4 lame. I had him X-Rayed, and he has a
hairline fracture, sesamoiditis, and some calcium coming on. So, Tevis is
out. I'm bummed, as I think this would be the one shot, as he is 19 already
and not sure how he would "look" in a year. So, I'm back to crewing for
Roxanne (Vickie) Greene as she attempts her 17th Tevis buckle. I'll be
there, and will watch for those of you who have sent me notes. I guess I
don't have to have pre-ride jitters anymore<grin>.
