Have felt for years that "tough" rides are far easier on the horses, and for 
a lot of reasons--not so fast, use of different muscle groups, mentally more 
stimulating, etc.  Have always made it a policy to start youngsters on the 
really hard rides, and save the so-called "easy" rides for the seasoned 
campaigners that can DO the repetition and speed.
