removing numbers

I'm sure I read in ridecamp a while back that hairspray works well to
remove numbers. I believe the poster said to spray it on and then brush
the number off. I haven't tried it - my horse wears his proudly!
However, once when I wanted to go to a show the next day I used the back
of a knife blade and scraped it off.
