I would refer you to the AERC Rules and Regulations, in particular Rule 2.
This rule in 2.1.4 calls for a "substantive physical examination of
metabolic and mechanical parameters before the ride, at control points with
in the ride and after the ride"

I would also ask that you review rule 2.1.7 "All veterinary control points
must be staffed by a veterinarian who will provide control"

If this description does not call for a veterinarian then the only vet
needed at a ride would be the Treatment Vet!  Remember the AERC prides
itself on the fact our competitions are controlled by knowledgeable
veterinarians and thus we are above any possibility of inhumane actions.

If you want to change Rule 2, then there are standard procedures that
provide this opportunity.

Heide, my wife, Michele Roush Shaw, DVM (licensed in the State of CA and
Nevada) says that finally someone agrees with me. This is in response to
your missive about judging a ride and diagnosis of a problem. I have
long considered that talented endurance riders can spot lame horses and
horses being stressed and riders that are making mistakes and are also
unaware of what is going on with thier horse. We don't need to have
licensed vets as judges. All we need is a (licensed) treatment vet to
take care of the real problems when they get to be real problems (If
they do).

I am glad that you agree with me and maybe you can help me promote a new
era of endurance ride control, the ride steward. This will save ride
management a lot of money and ease some of the burden of the difficult
task of finding vets for the rides.

Let's just not call them ride vets or head vets.
