ride vetting

Concerned scummy20@hotmail.com
Seems to me what started out as a "courtesy" to unlicensed vets
(as Ms. Smith puts it, that "top-notch" vets from other states
and other countries would be able to vet at rides) has now turned
into a political debate. Is the sport of endurance getting lax
in their standards? Do we settle for unlicensed vets when
there are plenty of licensed vets? Do we settle for vets that
show up at rides with NO drugs or even fluids, and no license,
because we just want to ride so badly? Have any of you
considered the fact that in some states it is ILLEGAL for an
unlicensed vet to even judge a horse at a show or evaluate the
horse for soundness? So then are we aiding and abetting an illegal act when we ride under a vet who isn't licensed?

Finally, I would ask, would you take your
kids to a doctor who is not licensed? While I think this country is way over-regulated, licenses aide in the protection of the
consumer. If an unlicensed vet makes a negligent error, who is going to be culpable? The unlicensed vet? The ride manager? AERC?

This is a matter that needs addressing by AERC and the BOD.
In fact, this very subject came up at convention last winter.
Apparently there was an out-of-state vet who vetted a ride in
So. Calif., treated a horse for what they diagnosed was wrong
with the horse, turned out that diagnosis was wrong, and
thereafter the owner of the horse contacted the Calif. Vet
Board, and the out-of-state vet received a letter warning against
practicing veterinary medicine in Calif. without a license. Seems
like this isn't as cut and dry as the discussion on ridecamp would
have you believe.

Yes, this is a can of worms. Where do we go from here?
