No colic on Beet Pulp

Jack and Judy asked: Any reported problems with gas when feeding beet pulp?

Like Darolyn, I feed beet pulp to a a herd of horses. ALSO to the foals,
sheep, goats, baby calves and even my Brahma bull--by hand! My cowboys call
me the "beet pulp lady" and tease me about my animal "chicken soup". BUT,
if I can get beet pulp into a animal's mouth about three times, he is my
buddy for life. It then becomes very easy to administer medicine, herbal
remedies or just get food into something that needs it.

I have never had a horse colic on beet pulp. I don't feed it by the cup; I
feed it by the shovels full. We do still soak it because we often add
things to it. This morning we have a new calf that is having difficulty.
After milking his mother and feeding him from a bottle, we started working a
little soaked beet pulp in his mouth. From experience, he will start
nursing but will also start eating beet pulp on his own fairly fast. Once
he will do that, chances are good that he will make it even if he doesn't
nurse well.

Don't give up on the beet pulp. It is more likely that your changes in hay,
or many other possiblities, caused the colic rather than the beet pulp.
