RE: EPM

Title: RE: EPM

One of my horse went thru EPM in the mid to late 80's when less was known about it.  I've followed what we know about it over the years since it was such a devastating disease.  (Horse was put down.)

Current theory believes that it is transmitted by feces (esp opposum feces).  The horse is an end stage host - not a normal host and the horse does not normally fall into the parasite's life cycle.

Our gelding probably contracted it through eating feed where the local opossums had "raided the bag", and we fed the rest, not knowing any better.  We humane trapped them.  At first, we didn't know what we were dealing with - not until we caught the first one.  Needless to say, opossums are NOT my favorite animal!  We trapped 5 in the barn before the raids quit.

Perhaps that is where the "it's in the grain" statement is coming from.  Even if the feedbag is intact, what's to say an opposum didn't get into it before it was bagged?

Hey gang
On the other list there is a thread regarding EPM and its presence in grains.
Weird sounding, but I thought to ask the vets on the board particularly if
they have EVER heard of this.
